No, but I've had "so this is it, we're all going to die" moments, involving muddy roads and Landrovers.

Has anyone ever said you look like a celebrity?
Not that I can think of.

Do you wear a watch? What kind?
I mostly wear the cheapest analog watches I can find, but do have several very good (mechanical) watches that I wear on special occasions.

Do you have anything pierced?
No. I might have gotten my ears pierced back when a lot of my friends did, but I had just read Eight Cousins by Louisa May Alcott and the association with pierced noses creeped me out.

Do you have any tattoos?

Do you like pain?
No, but I can tolerate it well in a good cause.

Do you like to shop?
It depends on what I'm shopping for. I love bookstores and the sort of record / CD stores where you can listen to anything in the shop before buying. Clothes shopping is iffier. I'm not usually actually buying anything at them, but third world markets can be tremendous fun.

What was the last thing you paid for with cash?
I think it was that beer after work.

What was the last thing you paid for with your credit card?
A book I ordered for a friend, whose address I then screwed up on the order.

What is the background on your cell phone?
Um, I think it is solid off-white.

Do you like redheads?
I tend to favor salt and pepper hair on men, but I've been known to dye my own hair red at times.

It would be better to ask if I have any un-weird relatives.

Is there such a thing as love at first sight, or it is more likely to be "lust at first sight"?
I've certainly felt both instant lust and instant rapport and I suppose you could call the combination love at first sight.

Probably when we moved away, which was when I was about 3. I'd be scared to go to that neighborhood now.

From time to time, but I don't really pay attention to it.

Fresh pineapple, an omelet with salsa and cheese, home fried potatoes with onions and peppers, very lightly buttered whole wheat English muffin, coffee made from freshly ground Sulawesi beans.

If you could suddenly get the skill to play any single musical instrument, which would you choose?
I'm torn between double reeds (oboe / bassoon) and Uillean pipes (Irish bellows blown bagpipes).

It's an outlet for my opinions (and, alas, complaints).

Do you have any prejudices you're willing to acknowledge?
It takes some effort for me to take young people seriously.

Meandering Through the World and Life.

What's the longest time you've stayed out of the country/where?
About 7 1/2 months. Ten years ago, I took a leave of absence and spent 5 months traveling overland through Eastern and Southern Africa, followed by a month on a mail ship and 6 weeks in the U.K..

Do you have nightmares frequently?
No, except under the influence of mefloquine (antimalarial drug).
