Barbra Streisand and Indecision

I went to see Buyer and Cellar Tuesday night. This is a one-man play, written by Jonathan Tolins and performed by Michael Urie. The factual part is that Barbra Streisand does have her basement fitted out as a shopping mall, where she keeps many of her possessions. The fictional premise involves an out-of-work actor who is hired to work in that mall. His interactions with Barbra and her staff and his discussions about the situation with his boyfriend, Barry, are interesting and very very funny at times. There are, however, some references which require a certain cultural background to appreciate. I thought it helped to know Los Angeles well to appreciate the bits about Santa Monica City Council meetings on KCRW or shopping at the Grove (probably my least favorite mall on the planet, by the way), for example. Overall, I thought this was worth seeing, but it was a bit longer than it needed to be.

In other news, I am in a fit of indecision about vacation plans for Christmas. It’s kind of a crappy time of year to travel, what with crowds and weather and all. But it is convenient to take advantage of a free day off and to know that nothing important will be going on at work. There is also the trade-off of what to do with vacation time and, in particular, a few things I am interested in doing in February. This is, of course, why I need to retire.
